What is a ground source heat pump?
Ground source heat pumps (GSHPs) are electrically powered systems that tap the stored energy of the greatest solar collector in existence: the earth. These systems use the earth's relatively constant temperature to provide heating, cooling, and hot water for homes and commercial buildings.
How do Ground Source Heat Pumps Work?
Geothermal heating uses the heat from the ground to heat and cool your home. The earth stays at about 50 degrees after you get 5 feet down into the ground. In the winter, fluid circulating through the system's earth loop absorbs stored heat from the ground and carries it indoors. The indoor unit compresses the heat to a higher temperature and distributes it throughout the building. So, in the winter time your unit is already starting out with a temperature that is on average 10-30 degrees warmer than the outside air. During the summer, the system reserves, pulling heat from the building, carrying it through the earth loop, and depositing it in the cooler earth. So, in the summer time your unit is already starting out at a temperature that is much cooler than the outside air.
